Crampy period
Period cramps (dysmenorrhea) are throbbing or crampy pains in the lower abdomen. Many women have period cramps before and during period.
For some women, cramps are only annoying. For others, period cramps are severe enough to disturbe their everyday life for a few days a month.
Treating the cause is crucial to decrease pain.
Symptoms
Symptoms of period cramps:
- Throbbing or crampy pain in the lower abdomen, which may be intense.
- The pain starts 1–3 days before the period, peaks at 24 hours after the start of period, and resolves in 2-3 days.
- Blunt continuous pain.
- Pain radiating into the lumbar region and the thigh.
Further possible symptoms:
- Nausea
- Loose stool
- Headache
- Dizziness
When should you visit a physician
Attend a gynecologist experienced in the assessment and treatment of hormonal disorders if period cramps disturb your life each month, if symptoms gradually worsen, or if severe period cramps start after the age of 25. Contraceptive pills containing synthetic hormone or intrauterine devices (coil) never lead to causal and permanent healing, these only suppress symptoms. After discontinuing such treatments, original symptoms, period cramps etc., usually return.
Period cramps may be caused by:
- Endometriosis (hormonally based disease)
- Adenomyosis (endometriosis of the muscular layer of the womb, also a hormonally based disease)
- Uterine fibroid (hormonally based disease)
- Pelvic inflammatory diseases
- Cervical narrowing
- Copper containing intrauterine device (coil)
- Developmental disorders of the womb
Predisposing factors:
There is a risk for period cramps if:
- younger than 30 years
- Early puberty at 11 years of age or less
- Strong bleeding at the period (hormonally based disease)
- Irregular period (hormonally based disease)
- Period cramps in the familiar history (dysmenorrhe)
- Smoking
Complications
Period cramps do not lead to other medical complications but may disturb school, work and social activities.
However, certain conditions associated to period cramps may lead to complications. Diseases resulting from the imbalance of the hormone system should be emphasized here. Period cramps, if caused by the imbalance of the hormone system, is only the first step, if left untreated, the problem will progress leading to even more and more severe problems.
IN EVERY CASE COMPLETE HORMONAL EVALUATION IS REQUIRED AND CAUSES OF THE DISORDER SHOULD BE TREATED!
Prior to applied therapy, determination of progesterone/estrogen rate and, depending on the result, further gynecological and endocrinological hormone evaluation is elemental. The time point of hormone evaluation depends on the cycle of the given person, and it will never be determined based on the reference range seen on the laboratory report, whether a hormone normal or abnormal is, we always have to look at their proportion and the influence upon each other.
